The Day I Finally Asked Myself What I Actually Want to Wear

There is a version of me from ten years ago who would never have posted a photo of herself online. Would never have said out loud: I am a size 8 and I look good. Would never have believed that anything she wore was worth looking at twice.

I spent most of my life dressing for other people. For jobs. For fitting in. For being the mom who looked put-together enough that no one worried about her. For Ruben. For the kids. For whoever’s opinion I was trying to manage that week.

There is that movie, Runaway Bride. The whole point of the movie is that Julia Roberts’ character always ordered her eggs the same way as whoever she was with. Scrambled for one guy. Over easy for another. She had been performing a version of herself for so long she had no idea what she actually liked.

That was me. Except with clothes.

I started Listen It’s Linda because I wanted to figure out who I was when I was just dressing for myself. Not for anyone’s approval. Not to look a certain way for a certain event. Just: what do I actually like?

Turns out the answer is color. Warmth. Pieces that feel like me when I put them on. Nothing too tight, nothing too loose. Things that move. A great shoe. Always a great shoe.

And red. I love red. I had this red gown on recently and I felt like myself in a way I have not felt in years. That is what this is about. Not fashion. Just feeling like yourself.

If you are over 40 and you have spent your whole life dressing for everyone else, this space is for you. Come figure it out with me. I do not have all the answers. But I am finally asking the right questions.
